Afternoon in the Shade

After surfing the point from the previous page all morning, we were invited to spend the afternoon in the shade. My truck had never used 4-wheel drive more than when I was searching for these waves. This wave was at least a hour from highway 200, and it is only accessible by vehicle before the rains come. We picked up a kid named Giovanni on the side of the dirt road as we were headed to the beach. He was headed the same direction so we gave him a ride. He hung out with us all day and then invited us up to his uncle's house to spend the afternoon eating mangoes and cocos, napping, and drinking beer which we had brought from town. The pictures speak for themselves. Not many surfers ever get to this spot and George said that a lot of people say it doesn't exist. It can be very hard to find as there are lots of turns and random dirt roads. Luckily I wrote it all down in my journal. Giovanni said that we were "very brave for coming there." I didn't know what to think about that comment, but all the people we met were super cool. Do good unto others and they will do good unto you. We would by cookies before we left town and on the way to the surf we would give cookies to everyone on the road that we saw walking. We bought a road working crew a cold three liter of Coke, I gave away my favorite Red Stripe hat to a guy on a horse, and a dive mask to a fisherman on the beach. People in this part of Mexico are some of the poorest in the country. A average eight hour day earns around 70 pesos which is about 5 bucks. We helped wherever we could. These people are so happy and they have nothing. Goes to show you that money is not everything America!
